Thematic Issue on Novel Molecular Approaches to Diagnostics in Clinical Microbiology and Clinical Veterinary MicrobiologyEditor: Dr Tina Joshi, Associate Professor in Molecular Microbiology, University of Plymouth, UK (tina.joshi@plymouth.ac.uk) Coinciding with the launch of our new Clinical Microbiology and Clinical Veterinary Microbiology Section, the above Thematic Issue’s call for papers is now open. Novel molecular diagnostics have played significant role in diagnosis of infectious diseases in recent years. The advent of highly transmissible infectious diseases such as COVID-19, monkeypox, avian influenza and rising antimicrobial resistance have necessitated the need for new innovative rapid diagnostic methods able to detect clinical pathogens of humans and captive animals (be they domestic, captive, agricultural etc) with high specificity and sensitivity to aid infection control and successful treatment through early diagnosis. This issue focusses on novel molecular methods that will be specifically suitable for use at point of care and/or in the field and could include applications of RT-qPCR, transcriptomics, pangenomics, metagenomics, microbiome sequencing and so on, underpinned by rigorous statistical analyses.
