Professor Vogel is the president of the European Academy of Microbiology (EAM), German microbiologist in the field of RNA biology, and the Founding Director of the Würzburg-based Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI), a site of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI).

Dr Elisa Granato (United Kingdom) is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford. Her achievements in the field of microbiology, in particular in the fields of bacterial ecology and evolution led to her being recognized with a FEMS Early Career Microbiologist Award.

With the passing of Ir. W. Alexander (Lex) Scheffers on May 12, the international yeast research community lost a colleague who, throughout a long career, was a highly active, respected and popular member.

Throughout Lex’s career, the words ‘academic service’ were at the core of his professional ethos. Those of us who had the privilege to meet Lex and work with him share grateful memories of an eminent scientist with a very strong sense of integrity, a beautifully dry sense of humour, a deep care for the quality of academic writing and, until an advanced age, an exceptional drive to contribute to the international scientific community.

The International Congress on Yeasts (ICY) and the International Conference on Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology (ICYGMB) represent two long-standing yeast conference series that came together in 2021 to organise this joint conference. As the yeast community journal, it is appropriate that FEMS Yeast Research is publishing this special issue to mark the first joint congress between these two large (and overlapping) yeast communities. The call for papers has been extended to 30th September for submission of original research papers by an attendee at the conference (presenting or corresponding author).
