FEMS Conference on Microbiology Belgrade 2022
Special invite - Submit your abstract now!
 

FEMS invites recipients of a FEMS Research & Training Grant to share their individual experience in our session on “Supported Research Projects and Impact of FEMS Grants on Professional Development and Outreach of Early Career Scientists” at the Conference on Microbiology 2022. 

How to submit
Send in an abstract on the research you did during your Research & Training Grant and what impact it had on your subsequent research and life, selecting the topic preference “FEMS Supported Projects”. If your abstract is accepted, we will invite you to speak at the above-mentioned session and offer you free registration to the Conference.

We encourage former grantees to also apply for a Conference Attendance Grant, which includes free registration as well as accommodation. If your abstract for this session is accepted for oral presentation, you may be granted with free registration and 3 days free accommodation. The deadline for abstract submission is 28th January 2022.

Not a former Grantee?
Are you looking to apply, but for another topic, and do you wish to apply for a Conference Attendance Grant as well? In that case, the regular Conference Attendance Grant regulations apply.

The #FEMSmicroBlog is proudly celebrating (almost) 2 years and we invite you to discover the broad range of sections and entries presenting exciting science, news from the FEMS community, microbiology meetings, historical events, fun facts, and more! A diverse pool of contributors has written close to 100 entries. An average of 225 people read blog posts, with peaks of readership over 1,800 for some entries! Blog posts of interest for an international, non-scientist audience are translated into major European languages to reach as many people as possible.

FEMS Journals
Rich Boden on identity in Peer Review
Double-anonymized peer review

FEMS Microbiology Letters has switched to double-anonymised peer review to improve the diversity, inclusion, and equity of its publishing.

The introduction of double-anonymised review will help to reduce the impact of unconscious biases throughout the journal, and allow reviewers to focus on the scientific content of papers, maintaining the high standards the FEMS journals are known for.

Spreading your research fast: Advance Access Articles

Peer-reviewed articles in the FEMS journals are after acceptance quickly published online as “Advance Articles”. These versions, which still need final editing and formatting, can already be found on the website and via search engines to speed up the dissemination of research.

Advance Articles of authors choosing Open Access will immediately be available for everyone like these two new publications in microLife and FEMS Microbes:

1. Microbiological characteristics of bacteremias among COVID-19 hospitalized patients in a tertiary referral hospital in Northern Greece during the second epidemic wave. E. Protonotariou et al.

Webinar on Microbiome Research

The recording of our recent FEMS Microbiology Ecology Webinar on Approaches, Methods and Challenges in Microbiome Research is now available to watch on our YouTube channel. Grants Corner
Research and Training Grants (1 January)

Research and Training Grants are meant to assist early career scientists in pursuing research and training at a European host institution in another country than their own country of residence. 

Support is limited to a maximum of € 600.

Meeting Attendance Grants (1 March)


Meeting Attendance Grants enable early career researchers to attend microbiology meetings worldwide to network, collaborate and keep abreast of new developments in their field. As an increasing number of conferences, society meetings and congresses are moving into online events, FEMS has opened the Meeting Attendance Grants (MAG) to support both virtual and in-person meetings.

Support is limited to a maximum of € 600.

"I applied for the FEMS Research and Training grant for the possibility to collaborate with leading scientists in the field of my interest. The grant allowed me to get research experience abroad, and to meet good people with the same field of interest. Fellowship in the best microbiology laboratory specialized in magnetotactic bacteria allowed me to develop my skills in research of bacterial biomineralization and cultivating microaerophilic bacteria."

Member Societies and Other News
Microbe of the year 2021

FEMS is happy to have supported VAAM – The German Association for General and Applied Microbiology, to internationalize their great initiative Microbe of the Year which just appeared with a new English website.

With this initiative, which has been successful for eight years, the association wants to draw attention to the many small but extremely important organisms that significantly influence and determine our lives. The Microbe of the Year 2021 is Methanothermobacter, and previous microbes were Myxococcus, Magnetospirillum and Lactobacilli. Want to learn more? All societies that are federated by FEMS, can apply for support to their project. They can submit a proposal here.
