Lwoff medal
You decide who will open the 10th FEMS Congress!

Who will take over the torch from Emmanuelle Charpentier and be our next FEMS-Lwoff Awardee, opening the 10th FEMS Congress? The decision is in your hands! Now is the time to nominate a Lwoff Award candidate to be presented at the 2023 Congress. The deadline has been extended to 10 April 2022.

ASM-FEMS Mäkelä-Cassell Awardee: Laura Glendinning, PhD

FEMS and ASM support the reciprocal exchange of one member from each organization to present his/her research at the other organization’s main conference via a joint Award. This year, ASM selected Laura Glendinning, PhD, Core Scientist (Research Fellow) in Genetics and Genomics at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom and member of the Microbiology Society.

She will receive the Mäkelä-Cassell Award and attend ASM Microbe 2022. Dr Glendinning will present her poster on High Functional and Taxonomic Diversity Amongst 9,977 Metagenome Assembled Genomes from Indigenous Ethiopian Chickens at ASM Microbe 2022.

We congratulate Dr Glendinning with this achievement and wish her a good time at  ASM Microbe 2022.

FEMS Statement on Ukraine

As the war in Ukraine continues, we wanted to re-emphasise the statement FEMS made at the start of Russia's invasion. FEMS focus is working on means by which we can help early career scientists affected by the conflict, taking on board suggestions from our member societies. We hope to communicate about the outcome of this very shortly.

FEMS Journals Article Awards

The FEMS Journals recently announced the winners of the best article awards. The Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Boards of the seven FEMS journals selected their favourite publications from 2021. The seven author groups received €1,000 each. Their winning papers are made free to read for everyone.

Furthermore, FEMS and Oxford University Press are giving extra promotional attention to the authors and their work. The interviews with the winning authors give interesting background information on their research projects and the inspiration behind their papers.

As an increasing number of conferences, society meetings and congresses are moving into online events, FEMS has opened the Meeting Organizer Grants (MOG) to support both virtual* and in-person meetings. Members of any FEMS Member Society that are preparing to organize (or co-organize) an online microbiology event to be held between 1 December 2022 and 30 November 2023 are eligible to apply.

Support up to EUR 15,000 per event is available. 
Deadline: 1 June 2022 for meetings taking place between 1 December 2022 and 30 November 2023.

*If you are organizing an online event, on the application form please indicate ‘online’ as ‘Venue’.
