Taking place 9-13 July 2023 in Hamburg (Germany), FEMS2023 is the biggest microbiology event in Europe dedicated to showcasing the latest developments in microbiology. Nominations are now open for our FEMS Science Communication Award!

This biennial award recognizes Europe-based microbiologists at any stage of their career that apply science communications and public relations to contribute significantly to the public discourse about science and evidence.

Previously this went to Cláudia P. Godinho for demonstrating a passion for science communication through her contributions to International Microorganism Day. You can read more about Claudia’s work here and browse through the previously running projects for this award here.

Thus, if you know of a campaign that contributes significantly to the public discourse about science and evidence, let us know so we can help amplify awareness of that project!

Summer School for Postdocs Applications Open

You can now submit your applications to the FEMS Summer School for Postdocs 2023. The FEMS Summer School for Postdocs 2023 will involve a combination of formal lectures, brainstorming sessions, problem-solving exercises and will finish with a small-group project design competition.

When? 4 – 11 September 2023
Where? Accommodation and all facilities are in the Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences (MedILS) in Split, Croatia
Who? Selected applicants. Applicants must be currently working in a postdoctoral position, or have completed a postdoc within 5 years (excluding special leave) of the end of the FEMS Summer School. Abstract submission opening tba.
What? This Summer School will focus on Cutting-edge microbial technologies for a sustainable industrial future.

As new people join our mailings, we thought it is a good time to re-introduce you to our FEMS team! FEMS is governed by a Council of Member Society Representatives and a Board of Directors, while our operations run from our office in Delft in The Netherlands.

We recently welcomed to our team, our new Executive Director, Elise Kuurstra and two Board Members and we are excited to continue connecting people and sharing knowledge through our activities!

Meet Pathogens and Disease Editor-in-Chief Prof. Gad Frankel

We are proud to announce that Prof. Gad Frankel is joining as the fourth Editor-in-Chief of our Journal Pathogens and Disease. Prof Frankel is based as the Imperial College London in the UK and specializes in molecular pathogenesis of gram-negative bacterial pathogens and antimicrobial resistance.

We had the pleasure to interview Prof Frankel and find more about his expertise and vision as Editor-in-Chief of Pathogens and Disease.

Grants Corner

Meeting Attendance Grants (1 March)

Members of FEMS Member Societies can apply for our grants. Meeting Attendance Grants enable early career researchers to attend microbiology meetings worldwide to network, collaborate and keep abreast of new developments in their field.

Support is limited to a maximum of € 750.

Meeting Organizer. Grants (1 June)

Members of FEMS Member Societies can apply for our grants. FEMS supports selected meetings within the European Area with a Meeting Organizer Grant. Scientific conferences, laboratory workshops and training courses, including online, will be considered for such support.

The maximum amount of a Meeting Organizer Grant is € 15,000. This round is for meetings taking place between 1 December 2023 and 30 November 2024.
