Secondly, we have recently published two Thematic Issues, which you can read via the links below:

  • Thematic Issue: Yeast in Food and Beverages - This issue provides a snapshot on the diversity, tradition, and progressiveness of yeast in the food and beverage space. The collection comprises a balanced portfolio of twenty three research articles and mini-reviews covering topics ranging from indigenous yeasts in traditional Asian beverages, to engineered yeasts for aroma production.
  • Thematic Issue: Lex Scheffers Memorial Issue on Yeast Physiology - W. Alexander (Lex) Scheffers was the founding editor in chief of FEMS Yeast Research and a very significant contributor to the yeast community. We were saddened at his passing in 2021 and FEMS Yeast Research is pleased to dedicate this special issue to his memory and legacy.

Welcoming New Editors:

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of two remarkable handling editors who will play pivotal roles in shaping the direction of FEMS Yeast Research:
Dr. Francisco A. Cubillos - Population Genetics and Genomics (Chile)

Dr. Francisco A. Cubillos, is a distinguished scientist in Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Ecology at Universidad de Santiago de Chile. He earned his PhD in 2010 from the University of Nottingham, UK, focusing on the genetic architecture of yeast. He identified key genes affecting phenotypic variations, resulting in nine impactful publications. After his PhD, he pursued postdoctoral research in Paris, studying Arabidopsis thaliana's natural variation and non-coding regions under drought stress. He returned to Chile with a research grant and established a group focused on ethanol-tolerant yeast from Patagonia, particularly S. eubayanus, S. uvarum, and L. cidri. Dr. Cubillos leads projects creating novel lager hybrids using genetic diversity from S. eubayanus, transitioning from wild yeast ecology to biotechnological applications. He has received prestigious awards and recognition for his extensive research contributions, amassing over 50 WoS Manuscripts and fostering advancements in Ecology, Genetics, and Molecular Biology.
Prof. Zengyi Shao - Synthetic Biology and Biorenewables (USA)

Prof. Zengyi Shao received her Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2009. She is now a Vernon Guse Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the Iowa State University and affiliated with the NSF Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC) and the DOE Center for Advanced Bioenergy and Bioproducts Innovation (CABBI). She is the awardee of the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative Award (2010), the Iowa Energy Center Impact Award (2016), the NSF CAREER Award (2018), the Bailey Research Career Development Award (2021), the NIH Maximizing Investigators' Research Award (2021), and the Award for Mid-Career Achievement in Research at Iowa State University (2023). The long-term goal of the Shao group is to (1) study the functional genomics of high-performing microbial species that have unique biochemical and biomedical potentials, (2) develop platform strain-engineering technologies, and (3) leverage these relatively simple and fast-growing testbeds to decipher critical steps in cellular commands, and eventually elucidate fundamental mechanisms in higher eukaryotes.

In addition to these handling editors, FEMS Yeast Research has welcomed five new members to the Editorial Board, strengthening our global representation:

  • Joseph Schacherer (France)
  • Paula Goncalves (Portugal)
  • Tom Ellis (UK)
  • Nitnipa Soontorngun (Thailand)

These additions to the Editorial Board bring a wealth of knowledge and diversity to FEMS Yeast Research, ensuring the journal's continued growth and development, and reflect our commitment to fostering excellence in yeast research amongst our community.

With an increasingly diverse and dynamic team, we are poised for an exciting future. FEMS Yeast Research is dedicated to providing a platform for cutting-edge yeast research, and these new appointments will undoubtedly contribute to the journal's continued success.
