Embracing an Open Future
 

All but one of our journals are becoming fully Open Access by 1 January 2024. New papers submitted to these journals from 1 September 2023 are entered into the Open Access pipeline.

For Open Access week, Elise Kuurstra, FEMS Executive Director, wrote about her thoughts on the move to Open Access as part of the OUP Blog: Supporting communities through society publishing.

The FEMS Journals becoming fully Open Access on 1 January 2024:

  • FEMS Microbiology Ecology
  • FEMS Microbiology Reviews
  • Pathogens and Disease
  • FEMS Yeast Research

We believe that Open Access is key in supporting our mission of sharing high quality microbiology research as widely as possible – and Open Access means that no-one needs to pay to read these articles published in our Open Access journals.

We are keeping FEMS Microbiology Letters, a broad scope microbiology journal, as a free-to-publish subscription journal, to ensure that everyone in our community can publish their sound science in a FEMS journal, regardless of their ability to access funds for APCs or Read and Publish deals. FEMS Microbiology Letters will continue to offer open access as an option to authors if they choose to publish OA, as it does now.

Open access is key to supporting our mission of disseminating high quality research as widely as possible: when high quality, peer reviewed sound science is open access, anyone, anywhere in the world with an internet connection, can read it.

ASM-FEMS Mäkelä-Cassell Travel Award for Early Career Scientists

The ASM-FEMS Mäkelä-Cassell Award supports a European early career microbiologist to travel to ASM Microbe 2024 with up to 4000 EUR!

To apply, submit an abstract to ASM Microbe 2024 on the submission portal and choose this award option. Applicants should be a member of one of our Member Societies.

This Open Access thematic issue, edited by Aaron Bivins, Asja Korajkic, and Warish Ahmed, focuses on Wastewater and Viruses.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, testing of wastewater for the occurrence ofSARS-CoV-2 was rapidly adopted across the globe.

It revived interest in wastewater as a source of public health information in general.

This timely collection has 11 research papers and 2 excellent Reviews, which are all Open Access and thus freely available.

#FEMSmicroBlog: GARDP innovating global antimicrobial research

There is a disconnect between the content of the antimicrobial research and development (R&D) pipeline versus the magnitude of the antimicrobial resistance threat.

There has been a limited focus or attempt to develop new treatments for those pathogens deemed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a critical priority for new treatments. Therefore, new treatments that work in new ways, unaffected by current drug resistance mechanisms are required, Laura Piddock explains for the #FEMSmicroBlog in occasion of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) on 18-24 November. #MicrobiologyEvents

Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2024

We invite you to attend the Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2024 which will take place on 8-11 April 2024 at Edinburgh International Convention Centre. This is a FEMS Member Society event.

The Conference takes place over four days and consists of scientific symposia, workshops, fora, professional development sessions, Prize Lectures, Hot Topics and much more.

Abstracts can be submitted from 11 October to 11 December 2023.
