FEMS Managing Director bids farewell

It is with much sadness that we announce the departure of FEMS Managing Director, Matthew Harvey.

Matthew has been a part of FEMS since 2017 and served as Managing Director since 2018. 
 

During his tenure many new developments and projects have been undertaken and milestones achieved. Matthew is leaving FEMS to join Erasmus University College, in Rotterdam. On announcing his departure Matthew stated: “FEMS has always felt like a family, a group of like-minded people supporting each other. Leaving has felt like saying goodbye to a group of friends but I know the right people and policies are in place to ensure a smooth transition to my successor. A particular highlight for me has been the World Microbe Forum. This really demonstrated the connections and commitment that bind microbiologist together from around the world. I am sure FEMS will continue to connect and support microbiologist in times to come.”

FEMS President Hilary Lappin-Scott added “the whole Board of Directors are grateful to Matthew for his hard work and enthusiasm, particularly as we have navigated the unprecedented and uncertain times of the COVID pandemic. We all wish Matthew the best of luck in his new endeavours”.

Prof. Isabel Sá-Correia and Dr Elisabeth Bik recognized with a Special Merit Award
 

Prof. Isabel Sá-Correia and Dr Elisabeth Bik have been awarded the FEMS Special Merit Award for 2022. This award recognizes contributions to FEMS and the microbiological community beyond and in addition to research excellence. It is presented on behalf of FEMS in acknowledgement and appreciation of efforts to support the field of microbiology and the microbiology community. These awards are a recognition and thank you for the hard work of both.

From 2022, FEMS is represented in two new countries: India and Brazil! We warmly welcome Prof. Rup Lal (left image) from The Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi (India) and Prof. Rosane Schwan (right image) from the Department of Biology at the Federal University of Lavras (Brazil) to the growing FEMS Ambassador family.

Ambassadors help FEMS promote our mission, vision, and activities of spreading microbiology knowledge, and connecting microbiologists and microbiological societies for benefit of humankind.

Grants Corner
Meeting Organizer Grants (1 June)

As an increasing number of conferences, society meetings and congresses are moving into online events, FEMS has opened the Meeting Organizer Grants (MOG) to support both virtual* and in-person meetings. Members of any FEMS Member Society that are preparing to organize (or co-organize) an online microbiology event to be held between 1 December 2022 and 30 November 2023 are eligible to apply.

Support up to EUR 15,000 per event is available. 
Deadline: 1 June 2022 for meetings taking place between 1 December 2022 and 30 November 2023.

*If you are organizing an online event, on the application form please indicate ‘online’ as ‘Venue’.

Meeting Attendance Grants (1 March)

Meeting Attendance Grants enable early career researchers to attend microbiology meetings worldwide to network, collaborate and keep abreast of new developments in their field. As an increasing number of conferences, society meetings and congresses are moving into online events, FEMS has opened the Meeting Attendance Grants (MAG) to support both virtual and in-person meetings.

Support is limited to a maximum of € 600.
Deadline: 1 March 2022
