Nano-RNases: oligo- or dinucleases?

Diribonucleotides arise from two sources: turnover of RNA transcripts (rRNA, tRNA, mRNA, and others) and linearization of cyclic-di-nucleotide signaling molecules. In both cases, there appears to be a requirement for a dedicated set of enzymes that will cleave these diribonucleotides into mononucleotides. This review covers the history and recent advances in our understanding of these enzymes and their substrates.

Erg6p is essential for antifungal drug resistance, plasma membrane properties and cell wall integrity in Candida glabrata

ERG6 gene encodes C-24 methyltransferase, one of the specific enzymes that differ in mammalian and yeast sterol biosynthesis. To explore the function of CgErg6p in the yeast pathogen Candida glabrata, the authors constructed the Cgerg6Δ deletion mutant. They found that C. glabrata cells lacking CgErg6p exhibit reduced susceptibility to both antifungal azoles and polyenes.

Climate change is having a major impact around the world and there is thus considerable interest in understanding the roles and responses of microbes in these rapidly changing environments. This virtual special issue highlights recent articles in FEMS Microbiology Ecology that explore microbes in a changing climate.

These articles take us to different biomes across the world, with studies charactering microbial responses, metabolic adaptations of microbial communities and their impacts on biogeochemical cycles, and the effect on symbioses and the interactions of complex microbial assemblages.
