The Biennial Retreat of the European Academy of Microbiology (EAM) took place this month. The EAM is a leadership group of eminent microbiology experts founded by FEMS to promote and recognize excellence in microbiology across Europe. The academy has currently around 160 experts from over 25 different countries, representing the numerous and diverse branches of microbiology in Europe.

The #OnThisDay project aims to assemble a collection of historically important microbiology events for every single day of the year.

Wastewater testing has become crucial to predict COVID-19 outbreaks in local communities. Especially in social surroundings like a University campus, wastewater surveillance can inform health authorities to prevent the further spread of SARS-CoV-2. The study “Efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 wastewater surveillance for detection of COVID-19 at a residential private college” published in FEMS Microbes analyses surveillance testing on a small campus. In this #BehindThePaper interview, Geoffrey Holm explains for the #FEMSmicroBlog the limitations of this approach, and how it helps unfold the dynamics of community infections.
